Apple is working hard to improve their maps, and they are working around the clock to get as much updated data as possible before launching it with the new iOS 10. In the latest updates, the van uses to capture surrounding data were spotting in the New York and Boston. The equipment they used is similar to the Google Maps. It contains cameras, LiDAR and high sensitivity GPS.
